2023 Newsletter - Week 2, Term 4
Greenmeadows School, 18th October, Newsletter #16: 2023
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou kātoa,
I hope your children had a great break and that you got to spend some time together over the holidays. It's always so neat to welcome them back at school after a break. Well done to everyone who remembered to bring a hat in with them on the first day!
The big election. No, not that one, our Board of Trustees election! How lucky are we to have so many top quality candidates put their hand up to help out? I assure you that not every school is as lucky to be in this position. We not only have great kids here at Greenmeadows, but great families to support us too. Make sure you have your say (just like you did in the national election) by dropping your voting papers in at the office.
I have again included the details of our planned tsunami hīkoi drill in this newsletter. Hopefully you will be able to collect your child from Church Road and start the long weekend a little early! Recent extreme weather events in our area show that it is important for us to prepare for the worst, hopefully never needing to go through it for real. Thankfully the weather is shaping up to be kind to us on Thursday!
Alongside several building projects that got underway during the holidays, we also initiated a CCTV installation. The reasons behing the installation are, perhaps, a sign of the times and I've included details below, but if that is not enough to answer your queries, please feel free to get in touch with me.
Finally, we said farewell to Mr Waterreus last Friday. While we will miss his presence as a classroom assistant, we are excited about an opportunity that he is offering children to be involved in martial arts. If it proves to be popular it may become a regular offering next year. Thank you Corey for all that you have done at our school, and good luck with this new adventure.
Ka kite anō,
Darren Holloway
Acting Principal
WELCOME TO GREENMEADOWS SCHOOL
We have had a surge in new students start with us since the last newsletter - a very warm welcome to Cohen & Olivia Brougham, Oliver & Caitlin Meehan, Kaycen-Jay Lawler-Harris, Marco Ravlich, Lucy Dodge, Kaia-Jade Ngapera, Gurkirat Kaur, Summer Bosher, Arlo Martin, Barron Wickremesighe, Abigaile & Nikita McLennan, Indyanna Wallace, Amelia Ball, Dihini Yahampath & Aishleen Kaur.
Our roll at present is 479.
GRAND PARENTS RAISING GRAND CHILDREN
We are looking at starting up a support group for grandparents raising grandchildren. This would be an informal group, meeting possibly once a fortnight in our staffroom, to provide support and friendship. If you would be interested in being part of this group, please contact the office and leave your name and phone number and we will be in contact.
FOOD FOR THE WORMS PLEASE
CCTV
Sadly, a number of these visitors get up to mischief, including: vandalism (graffiti and intentional damage to assets), drinking alcohol (often leaving smashed bottles), smoking or vaping (often leaving associated parephernalia) and engaging in dangerous behaviour likely to cause damage to assets or injury (such as climbing on buildings or our turf canopy). There have also been instances of theft (children's scooters left behind at school) and burglary (our outdoor speakers were stolen last summer). Police following up reports have also indicated occasional occurances of intimidating and threatening behaviour made between groups of trespassers.
I must stress that this concerning behaviour is occuring outside school hours. It nevertheless creates an unecessary workload for Mr Hicks, who often spends Monday mornings clearing the mess left behind from the weekend. There is also a cost involved in repairing damage or replacing stolen property (such as our speakers).
As a consequence of the above concerns, our Board has recently made the decision to install CCTV, primarily as a deterrent against unwanted behaviour outside school hours, and for the protection of our assets. The installation, including signage, is nearly complete. Cameras have been placed to monitor entry/exit to our grounds as well as key outdor areas where we have commonly experienced damage over the past couple of years. When the installation is complete our policies (found on our website) will be updated accordingly.
We do hope that this measure will lead to a reduction in unwanted behaviours in our school outside our normal hours. If you should spot antisocial behaviour occuring on our grounds outside of hours, please contact the Police in the first instance.
CANTEEN CLOSED FRIDAY 27TH OCTOBER
Please make sure when placing online orders that you select the correct date, we have had a few issues recently with the canteen being closed on a particular date and parents selecting the following day without checking.
DIGI AWARDS
It was brilliant to see the hard work of our children recognised up on the stage. While their teachers have provided opportunities at school to engage in digital work, it is often those children who go a bit beyond and spend their own time at home developing projects.
A big thank you to Mr Ball in overseeing all things digi-related here at Greenmeadows and for keeping our staff and children so motivated.
BOARD OF TRUSTEE ELECTIONS UPDATE
Voting papers went out in the mail on Monday and need to be returned to the school office by noon on the 15th November.
ART COMPETITION
PETER PAN
TSUNAMI HīKOI DRILL - THURSDAY 19 OCTOBER
We are also going to hold our tsunami evacuation drill for Greenmeadows School later that afternoon. This is a major exercise, and is part of a New Zealand wide focus on being prepared for an earthquake and tsunami.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The GMS tsunami hikoi to Church Road Winery - Thursday 19th October:
· At 1.15pm we will start our tsunami hikoi – via the crossing at Gloucester Street and up Osier Road
· Our evacuation point is the grassed area immediately north of Church Road Winery
· This is a walk of 1.7km from our school via Osier Road and through Knightsbridge
· As part of the drill we want practice releasing children to their parents, if they are available and want to pick them up. Children will then be released for the remainder of the day and do not need to return to school.
· We anticipate our drill will finish just after 2.00pm on Thursday 19th October.
· All those children who are not picked up will return to school for the remainder of the afternoon.
If parents are going to pick up their children we ask that you park legally on Church Road. Please do not park in the winery carpark. Be aware that Tironui Drive is very narrow and turning around is very difficult.
